What is Your Family’s Safe Level of Exposure to Toxins?

What is Your Family’s Safe Level of Exposure to Toxins?

You’re exposed to toxins everyday in your home, in the food you eat, in the air you breathe, in your water, in the products you use daily.  What is a safe level of exposure?  Scientists, after decades of research, have concluded that there is no safe level of exposure to lead, as an example.  As scientists learn more through the decades, the exposure level considered safe for many toxins moves lower and lower.  What do you do with this news?  How does it affect your family?

How Do You Keep Your Family Safe?

Oh no, if there’s no safe level – what do you do?  Is it too overwhelming?  Should you just ignore it and keep living as usual?  Or are there some simple actions you can take?  Although you may not be able to avoid all toxins, you definitively and easily can reduce your family’s exposure to toxins.

Yes, You Can Guarantee You’ll Reduce Your Family’s Exposure to Toxins

Although you may not be able to eliminate exposure, you can guarantee you will reduce your family’s exposure to known and suspected toxins.  If you could reduce your family’s exposure to toxins and it wouldn’t take any will power to do so, would you?

Why Don’t You Consider Toxicity When You Buy Products?

When you select a product to purchase, you probably consider three criteria – whether consciously or not:

1)      Is the product designed or intended to do what you need (for example is it meant for cleaning your hair or cleaning your dishes)?

2)      Does it perform well?

3)      How much does it cost?

What’s missing from your consideration?  Yes, I know it’s missing from your decision process.  The information you would need to include it in your decision is nearly impossible to gather. What you don’t consider in your decision, through no fault of your own, is toxicity or health risk.  Why don’t you consider this?

U.S. Government Makes Sure Products Are Safe, Right?

You grew up assuming U.S. government regulations prevent toxic products from appearing on store shelves.  As the FDA and leading scientists state, this assumption is incorrect.  You know from your own experience it’s incorrect. As you’ve seen in the news recently, for toys, children’s products, pet food, toiletries, seafood and even water, this assumption is incorrect. (For more information on how U.S. policies ensure that toxic products will be on your store shelves click here)  That’s right U.S. policies not only fail to prevent some toxic products, they actually ensure you will find toxic products on your store shelves.)

Since U.S. Policies Don’t Protect You, How Can You Protect Yourself?

You can call your government representatives, local, state and federal, and ask them to do more to protect you from toxins in products and in your commons such as water, air and soil.  Meanwhile, although you cannot eliminate all toxins from your family’s products, you can guarantee that you’ll reduce your family’s exposure to known and suspected toxins.  It doesn’t require will power, it does require information.

How Can You Add Toxicity and Health Risk Information to Your Buying Decision?

Thanks to Europe’s adoption of the precautionary principle, and to several U.S. non-government organizations’ (NGOs) efforts, some ingredient toxicity information is becoming more readily available.  Thanks to some manufacturers that strategically commit to produce only least-toxic products that perform well, you can find least-toxic products that meet your needs.  Luckily, some health risk information and least toxic products exist.  Unfortunately, it takes time to research and gather trustworthy information for your buying decision.
